Description
Restored vintage poster advertising historic Fort Marion in St Augustine, Florida. This poster is circa 1938, part of the New Deal era Works Progress Administration. Posters like this were made by this government agency to publicize exhibits, community activities, theatrical productions, and health and educational programs.
When this vintage poster was created, it was advertising what was then a relatively new part of the National Park Service. Fort Marion had been a US Army base until it was decommissioned in 1933 upon which it was transferred into the hands of the Park Service. A few years after this poster was made, in 1942, the park was restored to its original Spanish name, Castillo de San Marcos, which makes this vintage poster something of a conversation piece since it hasn't been known as Fort Marion for quite some time now!
Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the continental US. built in the late 17th century, it was transferred first to the British and then the US Governments.
This vintage poster was personally restored to bring back the brilliant look of the original depression era poster.
